The Effect of Project-Based Learning on Critical Thinking and Collaborative Skills among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

Project-based learning is a student-centered instructional approach in which learners investigate meaningful questions, develop solutions, create products, and present their findings over an extended period. Unlike traditional instruction, project-based learning requires students to apply knowledge, collaborate with peers, manage tasks, solve problems, and communicate outcomes. This study examined the effect of project-based learning on undergraduate students’ critical thinking and collaborative skills.

A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design was used with a simulated sample of 90 undergraduate students enrolled in an educational methods course. Students were assigned to an experimental group that completed a six-week community-based education project and a comparison group that received conventional classroom instruction. Data were collected through a critical-thinking test, a collaborative-skills questionnaire, project evaluation rubrics, and student reflection forms. The simulated findings indicated that students in the project-based learning group achieved higher post-test scores in interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving than students in the comparison group. The experimental group also demonstrated greater improvement in communication, task coordination, conflict management, and shared responsibility.

The findings suggest that project-based learning can support the development of higher-order thinking and collaborative skills when projects are authentic, carefully structured, supported by clear assessment criteria, and accompanied by regular instructor guidance.
