Mobile Learning in Higher Education: A Systematic Review of Benefits, Challenges, and Student Learning Outcomes

Abstract

Mobile learning has become an important component of technology-enhanced education. The widespread use of smartphones and tablets enables students to access educational materials, communicate with instructors, participate in discussions, complete assessments, and collaborate with peers across different locations and times. This systematic review examined the reported benefits, challenges, implementation practices, and learning outcomes associated with mobile learning in higher education.

An illustrative systematic review protocol based on PRISMA principles was developed. A fictional search of selected academic databases was conducted for studies published between 2015 and 2025. Following duplicate removal, title and abstract screening, full-text assessment, and eligibility evaluation, 45 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. The illustrative findings indicated that mobile learning was associated with increased flexibility, improved access to learning resources, greater student engagement, enhanced communication, and increased opportunities for self-directed learning. Some studies reported improvements in academic achievement, digital skills, collaboration, and formative assessment performance. However, the review also identified significant challenges, including unreliable connectivity, device inequality, distraction, screen fatigue, privacy concerns, small-screen limitations, limited instructor training, and inconsistent institutional policies.

The review concludes that mobile learning is most effective when it is integrated with clear learning objectives, accessible content, interactive activities, timely feedback, and appropriate institutional support. Mobile technology should complement sound pedagogy rather than replace it. All search results, study counts, and findings presented in this manuscript are fictional and intended solely for website demonstration and journal formatting.
